Geweld, seks, actie en spectaculaire special effects zijn de ingrediënten van de nieuwe, sensationele serie ‘Spartacus: Blood And Sand’, die zondag 14 maart van start gaat bij RTL 5.
Er komt naakt in voor, zowel mannelijk als vrouwelijk naakt, maar ook sex scenes.
Iemand die deze serie volgt? Hij begint deze week op de Nederlandse televisie, maar heeft vandaag in Amerika al de 7e aflevering van seizoen 1. Ik vind het een erg goeie serie, al hou ik niet zo heel veel van het "overdreven" bloedvergieten. Net als ik de Kill Bill films en in Ninja Assassin is er erg veel bloed. Bij een sneetje verliezen ze zowat 2 liter bloed. Maar goed, de serie is erg goed en het verhaal mag er wezen.

De duistere kant van de Romeinse cultuur en politiek wordt meedogenloos uitgelicht in dit bloederige epos over de strijd van één man tegen een heel rijk.
In de eerste twee afleveringen is te zien hoe de Romeinse slaaf Spartacus wordt veroordeeld te sterven als gladiator. Zijn vrouw wordt hem afgenomen en gedwongen als slavin verder te leven. De enige manier om zijn geliefde ooit nog terug te zien, is door te overleven in de arena en iedereen op zijn pad te doden voor de goedkeuring van het publiek. Hoe langer hij overleeft, des te populairder hij wordt en hoe gevaarlijker hij is. Niemand kan hem stoppen totdat hij zijn vrouw weer terugziet.
De serie is gemaakt in de stijl van de film ‘300’, die werd geroemd om de special effects. Ook in ‘Spartacus: Blood And Sand’ zijn grafische hoogstandjes te zien. In combinatie met de wrede gevechten, de adembenemende actiebeelden en de heftige seksscènes maakt dit ‘Spartacus: Blood And Sand’ tot een grensverleggende serie die niemand mag missen.
Verantwoordelijk voor deze historische serie is onder andere Sam Raimi, de succesvolle regisseur van de ‘Spider-Man’-trilogie en producent van de populaire tv-serie ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’. De hoofdrolspeelster uit deze reeks, Lucy Lawless, speelt in ‘Spartacus: Blood And Sand’ de rol van Lucretia. Zij is de manipulatieve vrouw van de rijke Romein Batiatus, gespeeld door de Britse acteur John Hannah, bekend van de films ‘The Mummy’ en ‘Four Weddings And A Funeral’.
‘Spartacus: Blood And Sand’ is door de talentvolle cast, succesvolle producent en de visionaire techniek meer dan alleen topentertainment. RTL 5 zendt elke zondagavond een dubbele aflevering uit van deze serie die de grenzen niet alleen doorbreekt, maar kapot slaat.

Official Starz statement regarding Andy Whitfield
Andy Whitfield, star of Starz's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has been advised by his doctors to immediately resume aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer, as a result of which he will not be returning for the series' second season, which was tentatively set to air in September 2011.
"It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as ‘Spartacus’ and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far," said Whitfield.
"Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."
No decisions have yet been made about the future of the series. "Right now, we just want to extend our concern and support to Andy and his family," said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director, Starz Media. "We will address our programming plans at some later date."
Starz still plans to air the prequel to "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" in January 2011. Entitled "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," it focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua and stars returning cast members John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah and Manu Bennett, along with newcomer Dustin Clare.
Season 2 is begonnen, jammer genoeg zonder de echte Spartacus.
In zijn woonplaats Sydney is acteur Andy Whitfield overleden. Hij was vooral bekend door zijn hoofdrol in de tv-serie 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand', die ook in Nederland is uitgezonden.
Bij Whitfield werd vorig jaar lymfeklierkanker vastgesteld. Vanwege zijn ziekte moest hij zijn rol in 'Spartacus' opgeven. Hij werd vervangen door de Australische acteur Liam McIntyre.
